The Challenge

In the aftermath of the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II, the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the world are faced with overwhelming challenges. Overwhelming when you consider the devastation on the ground:

  • Over 5.4 million lives lost
  • 1200 people continue to die every day as a result of the conflict; almost half are children under the age of 5.
  • Over 5.2 million Congolese children of school age, including 400,000 internally displaced children, receive no education
  • Education in the Democratic Republic of Congo is neither compulsory, free nor universal, and many children/adults are not able to go to school because they are unable to pay the enrollment fees
  • Literacy rate for women in Congo is barely at 60% compared to 81% for men
  • Of all school aged girls, only 51% are enrolled in school
